Idealocity has extensive experience in moving and cloning WordPress sites. There are several reasons for cloning a WordPress site including:

  • Creating a WordPress test site or “sandbox” so you can make changes to themes, plugins and code in the test site before making the changes on your LIVE site. This will allow you to make changes without breaking the LIVE site.
  • Creating a copy of a working WordPress site for another client that needs a similar site. This will save you a lot of time by not having to install plugins and themes in a brand new site.

Cloning a WordPress site is not as simple as copying the WordPress files and database file to a new location. There are WordPress plugins that claim they will clone a WordPress site but those plugins often do NOT make all the necessary changes to all the links. If you decide to clone a WordPress site make sure to check all of the following links on the target site: the permalinks, the menu links, the widget links, the footer links, and any other custom links created by plugins and themes.

Cloning a WordPress site is different from moving a WordPress site to a new hosting server. Moving a WordPress site to a new hosting server requires DNS changes that can take up to 72 hours. We do NOT provide “moving” services at this time.
